In an effort to ensure that criminals are prosecuted and punished, provincial authorities are enhancing the investigation skills of police officers in Balochistan, a senior police official said. At the same time, the provincial government is planning to introduce a witness protection bill before the Balochistan Assembly.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, Inspector General Muhammad Amlish Khan said efforts are under way to revamp the investigative skills of policemen. “Officers are being trained while efforts are under way to protect eyewitnesses,” he said. “The government will soon present the witness protection bill in the Balochistan Assembly.”

He said the police will use social media platforms for recording the statements of witnesses in order to avoid threats to their lives.

“The bill will ensure the protection of witnesses as a majority of the criminals are often released following lack of evidence,” he said. “We could record the statement via Skype and other means in order avoid revealing the identity of the witness in serious criminal cases.”

The inspector general of police was optimistic that police will be using modern tools for investigation. “The pace is slow but we are putting in our best efforts.”
