KARACHI: In yet another attempt to catch the 'big fish' involved in corruption, plainclothes officials detained a former officer of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) from Clifton on Friday.

Sources said that the arrested officer, Huzoor Buksh Kalwar, was picked up by personnel in civilian clothes from his residence in Clifton on Friday morning. Kalwar was an assistant director of the KMC in the 1990s and was accused of corruption worth millions of rupees. The arrested officer had previously been charged of corruption by the National Accountability Bureau and had served a jail sentence.

Separately, five political workers were apprehended during a targeted raid by law enforcers at a sector office of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) in Lines Area. The raid was conducted on the night between Thursday and Friday. During the operation, the entire locality was cordoned off and no one was allowed to go in or out. The law enforcers apprehended five suspects, including sector members Rahim, Rizwan and Amir alias Tanki. The suspects were shifted to an undisclosed location for further questioning. Their arrests were, however, not disclosed by any law enforcement agency.

Separately, law enforcers found weapons buried in a graveyard near Khajji Ground in Rizvia locality. Police officials said that the weapons, including two Kalashnikovs, awan bombs and ammunition, were dumped at the graveyard and were seized on the information provided by an arrested suspect, Fareeduddin, who was a member of the MQM's legal aid committee and an assistant director at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. The suspect is currently in the Rangers' custody.

In another raid, the Counter-Terrorism Department claims to have apprehended three suspected members of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan. CTD officials said that the arrests were made when personnel raided their hideout on a tip-off at Manghopir locality. The suspects were identified as Qismat Shah, Jamshed Khan and Hassan Khan. Explosives and weapons were also seized from their possession. Police officials said that the suspects were involved in various cases of murder, extortion and kidnappings of school children.
