KARACHI:

“I was asleep and have absolutely no memory of what actually happened to me,” says VJ Faizan Haqque, more than a week after his car ran into a truck near Nawabshah. He had fallen asleep because of which he was unable to react at the time of impact.

“It is very difficult to recollect how it all happened because I injured the back of my head, collarbone and jaw when I crashed into the windscreen,” he tells The Express Tribune. He has gone through a jaw surgery, with a ceramic plate being inserted into it and has been advised up to five weeks of bed rest. Faizan’s mother Roohi Haque shares with The Express Tribune that though her son has been on a liquid diet since the accident took place and lost a considerable amount of weight, he is still very active.

“Even at the hospital he was constantly walking with all the drips attached to his hand,” shared Roohi. She believes her son was fortunate enough to have survived the crash of such magnitude, noting how it took Faizan a while to regain consciousness, even after being taken to the hospital.

Fortunately, the trauma has not dented Faizan’s spirits and he is eager to hit the road again and. “It is not in my nature to stay down after taking a fall. I will finish the road trip and the documentary before the arrival of winter in the Northern areas,” he says.

This is not the first time that his travels were foiled, previously he had suffered various setbacks in the form of illness and funding being pulled off during his previous treks and road trips as well. “Last year I lost one of my friends during a K2 trek but we didn’t stop there and completed the whole journey,” recalls Faizan.

The VJ who was accompanied by Anoushey’s father, Agha Ashraf at the time of the accident, has been in constant touch with Agha. Feeling that their bond has “grown stronger” after the incident, he has already made it clear that Agha will have to re-join him once he gets back on the road.

Apart from this show, Faizan also has one other documentary-based project in the works which explores the rich cultural history of not only Pakistan but also the adjoining regions. He explained that unlike the current road trips, he was not working on this for the immediate future but for the long run. Faizan along with Anoushey will be making an internet show of this trip, one that will showcase the unexplored landscapes and untold stories from Pakistan.
