KARACHI: The Iranian government is gifting five hospitals to the Sindh government, one of which has already been made functional.

The now-functional 40-bed facility located in Khairpur city has been named 'Kausar Hospital'. The remaining four hospitals, located in Badin, Larkana, Shaheed Benazirabad and Thatta are under construction, the health officials revealed on Thursday. All five hospitals are being built in the province's flood-affected areas for maternal and paediatric care. The agreement for the construction of these hospitals was signed after the devastating floods of 2010.

"This action of the Iranian government will improve relations between the people of Sindh and Iran," said health minister Jam Mahtab Hussain Dahar. He said that the contract between the governments was a milestone in the history of the two neighbouring countries.

Khairpur's hospital was made functional on Monday while its operational agreement was made with the People's Primary Health Care Initiative (PPHI) on Thursday.

"The construction cost was borne by the Iranian government," said provincial health secretary Saeed Ahmed Mangnejo, adding that the provincial government, with the help of the PPHI, will look after the hospital, including its financial matters.

Mangnejo said that the Iranian government has also provided equipment to Khairpur's hospital, adding that the remaining hospitals will also be made functional soon.
