Fast food giant McDonald's has turned down its arch rival Burger King's proposal to create a hybrid “McWhopper” burger to celebrate International Peace Day, saying the “two brands could do something bigger to make a difference”.

In an open letter to McDonald's, Burger King had proposed that the two fast food giants join hands on International Peace Day on September 21 this year and merge their signature products ‘Big Mac’ and ‘Whopper’ to create ‘McWhopper’.

The product would be available for one day only and all the proceeds from it would go to Peace One Day, a non-governmental organisation, campaigning to make September 21 an annual day of global unity.

Responding to the offer, McDonalds termed it an “inspiration for a good cause”.

However, it turned down the idea, saying the two together could do something bigger to make a difference and asked the burger joint to join it for something more meaningful.

“We commit to raise awareness worldwide, perhaps you’ll join us in a meaningful global effort?” said McDonalds CEO Steve Easterbrook, in message posted on company’s Facebook page.

He further said, “And every day, let's acknowledge that between us there is simply a friendly business competition and certainly not the unequaled circumstances of the real pain and suffering of war.”

In an apparent jibe at the Burger King for going public with the ‘open letter’, the McDonalds CEO said, “A simple phone call will do next time.”
