PESHAWAR: A man was gunned down by militants in Sheikhan village on the outskirt of the city on Saturday night.

Insiders familiar with the matter told The Express Tribune a note was left next to his body which alleged that the deceased was a spy and his body should not be moved. The incident triggered a wave of panic in the area.

“The deceased has been identified as Raju,” a local told The Express Tribune. “He hailed from Punjab and had been living in the area for five years. It was believed he was suffering from a mental disability.”

According to the local, Raju was killed by unidentified militants.

“The note claimed Raju was killed for spying on members of a banned militant group,” he said. “A large number of villagers were present when the incident occurred. His body was shifted to Badhaber police station on Sunday morning.”

Speaking about the deceased, the local said Raju used to sleep at the village hujra at night and was often provided food by residents.

“He was once arrested during a curfew in the village,” he said. “Raju was beaten up and was only released after he produced an identity card.
