Root of the matter: Rahman college introduces genetic research centre

Dept will help in diagnosing diseases rooted in genes, says governor .

PESHAWAR: To boost research on genetic diseases in Pakistan, the Centre for Genomic Sciences at Rahman Medical Institute has been inaugurated in the city. 

“We know modern concepts in medicine suggest most diseases are rooted in the genes,” said Governor Sardar Mehtab Ahmed Khan after inaugurating the centre on Wednesday. “Hence, it is essential that doctors have the latest technology to diagnose such diseases and conduct research on their cure.”

Although Pakistan is not at par with the developed countries in the field of research, it is heartening to see the emphasis given to medical research at the institute, added the governor. He said the study of genes should also include animals and agriculture.

The governor lauded other initiatives taken by the institute, saying its recently-launched journal is the first-of-its-kind publication in the country for undergraduate medical institutions.

Mehtab also urged the administration of the institute to develop national and international links so that the benefits of modern medical education and research could be shared with students, doctors and other people of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

RMI Principal Dr Tariq Mufti was present of the occasion and reaffirmed his commitment to the centre.
