River Indus in high flood at Kotri in Sindh: Met department

Over half a million people have been affected by the floods in Sindh so far with 113,561 moved into 363 camps

Military and civil administration units have sped up rescue and relief operations across Sindh after the Meteorological  Department predicted high-floods in River Indus at Guddu, Sukkur and Kotri barrages, Radio Pakistan reported.

According to details, the Flood Forecasting Division of Met Department said that River Indus was in very high flood at Guddu, in high flood at Sukkur, Chashma and Kotri on Saturday, while it was in medium flood at Kalabagh and Taunsa, and low at Tarbela.

Resultantly, Kacha area of the district has been inundated by the ravaging floods.

However, the department has predicted that the River Indus at Kalabagh is likely to attain high flood with levels ranging between 500,000 cusecs to 550,000 cusecs on Saturday evening.

River Indus at Chashma is also likely to attain high flood levels
between 500,000 cusecs to 550,000 cusecs on Sunday.

The flood forecasting division in Lahore predicted that the River Indus at Kotri is likely to attain high flood levels, ranging between 450,000 cusecs to 550,000 cusecs on Sunday, with the situation to remain for the next 10 days.

Following the cautions given by the department, the armed forces and civil administration accelerated the operations to provide relief to the affectees in Sindh.

Meanwhile, Sindh Minister for Irrigation Nisar Ahmad Khoro visited affected areas along the banks of River Indus near Larkana.

According to the National Disaster Management Authority, 2,338 villages and some 652,215 people have been affected so far in the province.

As many as 363 relief camps have been set up in the province where 113,561 people are being provided shelter.

Further, the water level increased at Layyah owing to water flown in from Chashma.

The flash floods have damaged Lala Careet bridge in Layyah. The bridge used to connect the riverine areas to Kot Sultan.

Moreover, River Indus at Tarbela, River Kabul at Warsak and Nowshera, River Panjkora at Dir, River Khiali near Charsadda Road, River Shah Alam at Takhtabad and River Adezai at Adezai Bridge are in low flood.

All other rivers in the province are flowing normal and no warning has so far been issued regarding their water levels.

Overall, 179 people have been killed by floods across Pakistan with 1.239 million people affected.
