Pakistan to release 164 Indian fishermen on August 3

Decision taken pursuant to Ufa agreement between PM Nawaz and Indian PM Modi

Pakistan will be releasing 164 Indian fishermen on August 3, a source at the Pakistan High Commission in India said on Friday, Indian press agency TNN reported.

“A decision has been taken at the highest level of releasing 164 Indian fishermen on August 3 in pursuant to the Ufa joint statement. Pakistan has always kept the humanitarian issues close to its heart, especially in India-Pakistan relations," the source added.

After a meeting between Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi at Ufa in early July, the two leaders issued a joint statement that outlined a number of steps the two countries intended to take to improve their relationship, including the release of fishermen in each other’s custody along with their boats within 15 days.

Meanwhile, Indian officials said that the Gujarat government had moved court to secure the release of Pakistani fishermen currently in Indian jails.
