LAHORE: The urban transport company, Daewoo, will overhaul 70 of its dilapidated buses locally to meet the transport requirements of the city.

These reconditioned buses will be operational soon.

Mian Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman, the transport minister, launched the local repair programme at the company’s transport house in Sundar.

On the occasion, Rehman praised Daewoo for investing in Pakistan and providing “excellent transport facilities to the public”. He added, “Although Daewoo is operating a large fleet of buses in Lahore, we urge the management to further increase the number.” In reply, the director of Daewoo, Jay Chang, said that he would communicate the minister’s request to Daewoo’s head office in Korea.

The transport minister also talked about the Punjab government’s plans that are in the pipeline to make the transport sector better. He said that a computerised fitness system will be introduced from next year. He warned the transport companies that if they failed to repair or change the dilapidated buses, the government will take the buses off the roads.

The ministers repeated his promise that the Lahore Transport Company (LTC) will provide a new fleet to operate on different routes next year to ease the traffic congestion.

Meanwhile, the LTC has prepared a summary of steps that will encourage investment in the private transport sector and sent it to the chief minister. One of the suggestions is to increase the daily subsidy given to all buses (currently Rs1,250). Another is that the government should give a 50 per cent subsidy on CNG kits in order to encourage transporters to convert their buses to CNG.
