PESHAWAR: Two officials of security forces were killed and five members of the bomb disposal unit (BDU) were injured in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast in the Sandana area of Tirah Valley Sunday night.

A security official said that the BDU was checking the area for explosives prior to a planned media visit to Sandana, when the vehicle they were travelling in hit a roadside IED.

The deceased were identified as Naib Subaidar Iftikhar and Lance Naik Mushtaq, the official said.

The place where the explosion occurred was one of the main training centres of the militant outfits prior to the Khyber-2 Operation of Pakistan Army, he said, adding that it was taken over by the security forces recently. “The centre consisted of a series of compounds where the militants filmed propaganda videos of their training sessions,” he said.

The operation in Tirah Valley has reached its logical end with a majority of the area under the military control. However, there are pockets where militants are still holed in, said the officials. At present, the security forces are combing the area to clear any sort of ammunition, bombs, mines or IEDs that the fleeing militants had left behind, he said.
