Crowded graveyards

Letter July 06, 2015
Today, we have bigger cities and towns but smaller graveyards

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan faces a multitude of socioeconomic and civic problems and challenges. These include: crime, corruption, land grabbing, insufficient housing, congestion, waste disposal, pollution in all manifestations, water shortages, electricity problems, poor sanitation and militancy, to name only a few. A new addition to these problems is the overcrowding of graveyards in towns and cities. Today, we have bigger cities and towns but smaller graveyards. In my home district of Larkano, as well as in other cities of Pakistan, crowded graveyards have fast become a nagging problem. In the wake of the rising number of deaths resulting from the recent heatwave, it was reported that corpses were lying in the morgues because graveyards did not have space to accommodate bodies.

Would the ruling elite, city planners and administrators be kind enough to reflect on this growing problem and take steps to address it on a war-footing so that the souls that have left this world are not desecrated in this shameful manner?
