KARACHI: Federal Minister for Commerce Khurram Dastgir has said that the government has succeeded in creating a stabilised platform and the time has come to shift focus from stabilisation to growth.

“The economy of the country is on the right track today due to stabilisation measures and initiatives of the past two years,” Khan said while talking to the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) members on Thursday.

The minister pointed out that despite positive forecasts about the macroeconomic stability of Pakistan, the challenge for the government is that it has to deal with trust deficit of the business and industrial community.

Businessmen Group Chairman and KCCI former president Siraj Kassam Teli underscored the need to exhibit “the intent” by moving towards resolving the issues and improving the overall trade and economic situation of the country.

Criticising the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) for harassing existing taxpayers and failing to act against evaders, he said that the tax machinery had identified 700,000 tax evaders a long time ago who live luxurious lives, frequently travel abroad, use credit cards and their children study abroad but they don’t pay taxes.
