Re-polling at 33 stations in PP-97 Gujranwala underway

Main contenders for the constituency are PML-N's Ashraf Warraich and PTI's Nasir Cheema

People started to cast their votes on Sunday as re-polling in 33 polling stations of PP-97, Gujranwala was underway, Express News reported.

The polling process began at 8am and will continue till 5pm with around 52,550 voters set to exercise their right to vote. The main contenders for the constituency are PML-N's Ashraf Warraich and PTI's Nasir Cheema.

Strict security measures have been taken to maintain law and order situation during the elections.

Earlier, the election tribunal declaring the constituency’s elections null and void had ordered re-polling in 33 polling stations after rigging was proven there.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz candidate Ashraf Warraich had succeeded in the constituency during the 2013 general elections.

However, the tribunal issued the order for re-polling on a petition filed by the losing candidate, Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid’s Nasir Cheema, who challenged the winning candidate, Warraich’s victory claiming vote rigging. Cheema later joined the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.

Nasir Cheema had alleged that his rival had managed to cast 15 thousand bogus votes in his favour.
