ISLAMABAD: Cultural programmes to be organised by Lok Virsa in the first quarter of 2011 were finalised in a meeting on Wednesday.

In January Lok Virsa will organise a cultural festival in Multan (January 8). It will also organise a live concert featuring folk artists from Punjab, an exhibition of metal work in Islamabad featuring artisans from across the country, and a one-day national seminar on cultural heritage in Islamabad.

In February, Lok Virsa will hold a Kashmir cultural festival in Islamabad to mark Kashmir Solidarity Day (February 5) and a folk festival in Sialkot to mark the 100th birth anniversary of legendary poet Faiz Ahmad Faiz. The cultural centre will also produce a video documentary on heritage museum and hold a workshop on revival of Sarangi, a bow instrument. Towards the end of the month, Lok Virsa will launch a documentary and book on Pakistani and Norwegian children folk games and field plays. The month will conclude with an exhibition-cum-workshop on block printing.

There will be an exhibition featuring women artisans-at-work in March to mark the International Women Day (March 8). Lok Virsa will also hold special activities on Pakistan Day and a live musical concert featuring a renowned folk artist under their on-going on documentation of genealogical musical families.

The board also approved two programmes for December, including a picture exhibition depicting the life of former Prime Minister Behazir Bhutto, to mark her third death anniversary. The board also approved various activities in connection with Quaid-i-Azam Day (December 25) and Christmas celebrations. The training classes for classical music that were initiated in November will also continue during the coming quarter.

Federal Minister for Culture Pir Aftab Hussain Shah Jilani, who is the chairperson of Lok Virsa, chaired the meeting. Lok Virsa’s Executive Director Khalid Javaid and culture secretary Moinul Islam Bukhari were also present in the meeting.

Jilani said, “Culture is one of the priority areas of the government. We are committed to promote and project Pakistan’s rich cultural heritage not only at home but also abroad.”
