KARACHI: Two alleged gang members and two suspected criminals were killed in separate encounters with the police in Lyari and Manghopir overnight.

Police officials said that two members of a gang were killed in Kalri during an encounter that took place when a large police contingent was conducting a search operation in parts of Lyari, including Kalri and Baghdadi. They claimed that the suspects offered resistance during the search operation and the law enforcer retaliated, killing the two men in an exchange of fire. The bodies were taken to Civil Hospital, Karachi, where they were identified as Jahangir and Zubair.

Lyari divisional SP Fida Hussain claimed that the deceased suspects belonged to the Uzair Baloch group, adding that weapons and hand grenades were seized from their possession. He further said that they had been involved in various cases of targeted killing, extortion and kidnapping as well as a grenade attack at a Pakistan Peoples Party camp in Lyari in April. The cases have been registered and further investigation is underway.

Separately, two suspected criminals were shot dead during an alleged encounter with the Manghopir police in the Northern Bypass area. Officials said that police personnel tried to intercept the suspects, travelling in a truck, during routine patrolling but the men opened fire at the law enforcers in an attempt to escape. SHO Ghulam Hussain Korai said that the police chased the suspects and killed them after an exchange of fire. SHO Korai claimed that the police had also recovered 10 stolen motorcycles from the suspects' possession, which they believed were to be smuggled to Balochistan. He added that the bodies had been shifted to the Edhi morgue in Sohrab Goth for identification after medico-legal formalities were completed at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
