Population Council held orientation session for senior faculty members from across country

ISLAMABAD: The University of Punjab (PU) has approved the inclusion of population and development as a core course in its Mass Communication programme.

This was announced by Population Council (PC) Deputy Director Seemin Ashfaq at a two-day orientation session on ‘Population and Development’ for senior faculty members of mass communication departments of eleven leading universities of the country, said a press release.

The workshop was arranged under the United Nations Population Fund project “Sochain, Badlain, Amal Karain”.

In the workshop, the country’s leading scholars delivered lectures on a wide range of  topics such as Islam and family well-being, population dynamics, intersection between population and development, migration, urbanisation and globalisation, poverty, family health and population growth, interrelations of population, natural resources and environment, gender equality, equity and development.

The concluding session was chaired by renowned journalist Muhammad Ziauddin. He emphasised that only education can bring real change in Pakistan and appreciated PC’s efforts in highlighting and working for this national cause.

PC Country Director Dr Zeba Sathar appreciated the interest shown by universities for teaching this topic of national importance and thanked them for taking steps to include it as a course in their respective departments.

Participants were of the view that introduction of such courses would build capacity of future media professionals and help them in developing a better understanding about population issues.
