SYDNEY: Police in Melbourne released photos of two men accused of racially abusing three Muslim women on a busy train and punching a man who tried to defend the women defence.

Jason Cias, 37, was travelling from Melbourne's Central Station on a Craigieburn-bound train when two men started abusing the women.

According to the father of three, the racial vilification started when one of the young women sat down next to the men and they told her she should not wear a headscarf in Australia.

When the woman asked the man what his problem was, the incident escalated and the woman's friend began speaking in Arabic to calm the situation.

"The comment was 'You shouldn't be speaking that shit in Australia'".

The three women then got off the train at North Melbourne before one of the men threatened to 'f***ing smash' them.

Police said that Cias spoke to the men about their behavior, but that only provoked them further.

'I said to the guy, "Mate, they're women". The implication there was you don't threaten people, particularly women,' he said.

Cias was then told to mind his own business and punched in the face twice in front of shocked onlookers.
