Health department’s duties

We hope the government remains alert in all areas where Naegleria has been known to have taken lives

KARACHI: As if the water shortage in Karachi was not already a big enough problem for its citizens, we are now dealing with the waterborne disease Naegleria. The disease has taken a few lives this year, with the first death reported from the Gulistan-e-Jauhar area of the city. Last year, several deadly cases were highlighted from different parts of the city.

Funds were spent on adding chlorine to Karachi’s water supply. Now, the people of Karachi are infuriated after claims that the city’s drinking water may not have been sterilised perfectly. We hope the government remains alert in all areas where Naegleria has been known to have taken lives and makes efforts to eradicate the problem before we start seeing headlines similar to the ones that followed the Ebola outbreak in Africa.
