A teacher’s tale of bravery

Letter May 24, 2015
I urge government to provide proper facilities to public schools and to teachers in order to foster education culture

KARACHI: We are all aware that the lack of basic education is one of the core problems of Pakistan and for that we often blame our education system and government officials. However, very few of us take the responsibility upon ourselves to enlighten the children of our nation with education in the true sense. Instead, people usually blame others and never take any measures themselves to bring about improvement.

Recently, I discovered the story of a great teacher, Ms Gulshan Salomi, who travels nearly 75km from her village, Rasulpur Bhalliyaan, to Bajwat Government Girls Primary School just to teach three students enrolled there. This school lacks all basic facilities such as classrooms, furniture, lights, drinking water, toilets and even boundary walls. I am delighted to know that we still have such great teachers who teach students because of their passion, and not just for pecuniary rewards. This news has also given me new hope about the future of Pakistan. I urge the government to provide proper facilities to public schools and to teachers in order to foster education culture in our country.
