Political discord: Balochistan Assembly speaker resigns

Jamali sent his hand-written resignation letter to the acting Governor, who reportedly accepted it

QUETTA: As pressure mounted, Balochistan Assembly speaker Jan Muhammad Jamali resigned on Friday, with caretaker Governor Balochistan Qudos Bizenjo reportedly accepting his resignation.

According to the sources inside the Governor House, Jan jamali’s hand written resignation letter was received by the acting Governor Bizenjo on Friday. Earlier, the governor had said that a typed resignation letter was not acceptable.

The provincial cabinet had on Thursday decided to move a no-confidence motion against Jamali in assembly.

However, no such motion was brought in the Balochistan Assembly during Friday’s proceedings. But Jamali, who is currently in Saudi Arabia for Ummrah, sent a written resignation to Bizenjo.

Jamali and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leadership have been on a collision course ever since the Senate elections when he voted for his daughter Sana Jamali, ignoring the party decision.

The move even drew the ire of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif because it meant Sardar Yaqoob Nasir, a close friend of the premier, lost the election.

The PML-N barely won three Senate seats despite enjoying a majority in Balochistan.
