KARACHI: Akbar Nagori, the brother of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) MPA Javed Nagori, was laid to rest on Saturday. He was critically injured in a grenade attack in Nayabad, Lyari, on Friday night and later succumbed to wounds. Although police investigators suspect a Lyari-based gang to be behind the attack, they have so far been unable to fix responsibility on any one group.

At least four others, including two police personnel, who were part of the minister's security detail, were also wounded in the attack, while Javed Nagori managed to escape unhurt.

"The minister was meeting people at his office at the time," said a witness. "Suddenly, two men on a motorcycle hurled a hand grenade at the office and sped off." Though Javed Nagori remained unhurt in the attack, his brother, Akbar, and their guards were injured. They were rushed to Civil Hospital, Karachi, where Akbar succumbed to injuries during treatment. The police personnel are also said to be in critical condition.

Residents told The Express Tribune that Javed Nagori, Sania Naz and Shahjahan Baloch were given their parliamentarian tickets by Uzair Baloch, the chief of the banned Peoples Amn Committee. "After the operation, Shahjahan and Naz continued to support Uzair, but Nagori, being a diehard worker of the PPP, openly started opposing him," said a resident, seeking anonymity. "Nagori had reportedly been asked by the Uzair Baloch group not to participate in the October 18th PPP rally. He, however, played a vital role even in the organisation of the latest PPP rally held in Kakri Ground."

Residents added that the Baba Ladla group could also be behind the incident as Nagori was a rival of Nabil Gabol, the former PPP MNA from Lyari.  "We are not sure which group is behind the attack," said DSP Murtaza Mirani while speaking to The Express Tribune.

Javed Nagori is the provincial minister for Katchi Abadis. He and another PPP MPA, Sania Naz, have been on the hit list of criminal groups. Naz has also escaped several attempts on her life, orchestrated by the Baba Ladla group.

Meanwhile, the funeral prayers of Akbar Nagori were offered at Eidgah Masjid at Shah Waliullah Road in Lyari and were attended by a large number of PPP leaders, including Waqar Mehdi and Najmi Alam. He was later laid to rest at Mira Pir graveyard.
