PESHAWAR: The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government replaced Federally Administered Tribal Areas additional chief secretary (ACS) Azam Khan and appointed Muhammad Aslam Kamboh in his place. The latter took charge on Tuesday.

Khan served as the Fata watchdog’s boss for six months. An official privy to the development told The Express Tribune that Governor Sardar Mehtab Ahmad was not satisfied with Khan’s performance. “He did not turn up to meetings and hence had to be replaced,” the official said.

Khan, who has also served in different capacities in the K-P government and tribal political administrations, has a history of differences with political governments throughout his career. The official added the decision was taken jointly by the governor and the provincial government. “The new ACS is the blue-eyed boy of both the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf,” he said, adding Kamboh has no experience of serving the tribal areas or K-P.

Despite a ban?

When approached for a comment, the establishment additional secretary Mian Muhammad said he is unaware of the transfer. “The Election Commission of Pakistan has banned transfers and postings due to the upcoming local government polls,” he said.

Pacing up

Governor Mehtab directed FATA Secretariat officials to speed up development projects and ensure their timely completion. According to a handout issued on Tuesday, the governor gave policy instructions to the new ACS and expressed hope the department will function efficiently under his supervision.
