KARACHI:

Religio-political parties, backing Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) candidate Rashid Naseem in the NA-246 by-polls, asked their supporters to come out on the day of the election at any cost to make him win against both the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and the provincial Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

On the eve of the crucial by-election, religio-political leaders pledged their unconditional support to the JI in a joint press conference at JI headquarters, Idarae Noor-e-Haq. They belonged to parties such as Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam — Fazl, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam — Samiul Haq and others.

“The provincial ECP has become a party to this election by favouring the MQM and has violated its own code of conduct by appointing election staff affiliated with the party,” claimed PML-N leader Senator Saleem Zia.

JI’s Karachi chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said that a number of Karachi Port Trust’s employees who were appointed during the tenure of MQM’s Babar Ghauri will serve as presiding officers at polling stations.
