Frustration: Woman sets herself ablaze, dies

Her family says she became distraught after her ‘rapist’ was granted bail.

FAISALABAD: A woman who was allegedly raped by a relative on Friday committed suicide by setting herself alight in Millat Town police area on hearing news that he had been granted bail.

Amjad Nazir, her uncle, told to The Express Tribune his 32-year-old niece, a resident of Sakhi Sarwarabad, had been divorced by her husband a few months ago.

He said the woman, a mother of three, moved in with her parents.

He said last month, some relatives stayed at their house and one of them raped her.

He said his niece had registered a case against the accused. He said on Friday, a sessions court had granted bail to the accused.

“When she heard the news, she began crying and ran into her room,” he said. He said a few minutes later, she doused herself with kerosene and herself alight.

He said her mother had tried to stop her but failed. He said she too was also burnt in the incident.

“They were taken to a hospital where my niece died,” he said. “Doctors say her mother’s condition is critical.”

The Millat Town SHO said the body had been taken into custody and despatched to the mortuary for post mortem examination.

Separately, a 38-year-old man, a resident of Saifabad set himself alight after quarrelling with his family over his younger’s brother marriage.

He was taken to Allied Hospital where doctors said his condition was critical.
