KARACHI: The city health director issued on Saturday show-cause notices to five doctors and suspended a health worker for being absent from their duties at a public health facility.

The health worker, who was responsible for administering vaccines, and the doctors found themselves in hot water when Dr Zafar Ijaz, Karachi's highest medical officer, visited the Sindh Government Ibrahim Hyderi Hospital without prior notice. He sought the attendance records of all the employees and checked the staffers to ensure that they were there.

The director's inspection revealed that five doctors were absent from their duties. He issued show-cause notices to them, demanding their explanation for their absence. Meanwhile, a health worker, identified as Shakil, was suspended for repeated absence from his duties.

Dr Ijaz said that an emergency visit campaign had been launched for public hospitals across the city on the directives of the provincial health minister and secretary, to keep a check on  the employees' presence.

"Disciplinary action will be taken against staffers who remain absent and the heads of all health facilities have been told to inform the department about such employees."

He also requested all administrators to ensure hygiene in the hospitals and proper treatment for patients.
