PESHAWAR/ CHARSADDA: A suspected militant was killed in Frontier Region Peshawar, while another was arrested in the provincial capital on Wednesday morning. On the same day, three hand grenade attacks were orchestrated by unidentified miscreants in Charsadda district.

A Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militant was killed in an exchange of fire with security forces in Faridi, FR Peshawar on Wednesday morning.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, a political administration official said security forces had acted on an intelligence report.

“He was a member of the TTP and was wanted by law-enforcement agencies and the security forces alike,” said the official.

Similarly, the counter-terrorism department (CTD) arrested an alleged militant who was trying to transport explosives on his motorcycle at Custom Chowk, Pishtakhara.

Acting on intelligence reports, CTD officials arrested Shah Hussain. He was allegedly involved in the kidnapping of Pashto actor Alamzeb Mujahid in 2009 and reportedly had a hand in the Army Public School attack which took the lives of over 150 people, most of them schoolchildren.

According to CTD officials, Hussain was taken into custody while his accomplice Aziz Jamal managed to escape. CTD also recovered 1,250 grammes of explosives and a detonator from his possession.

Red alert

Three hand grenade attacks rocked Charsadda district within the span of eight hours on Wednesday. Although no casualties were reported, the attacks triggered a wave of panic and uncertainty.

Unidentified militants lobbed hand grenades at the house of Dr Younas, a well-known psychiatrist. In a separate incident, militants lobbed a hand grenade at a CNG Station on Takht Bhai Road. Similarly, Faheem Haider’s house in Kangra village was also attacked by a hand grenade. At this stage, officials have refused to comment on the cause of these attacks. However, residents believe the grenade attacks were carried out to extort money.
