LAHORE: The National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC) has launched a power transmission programme to supply power efficiently from generation plants to distribution companies and load centres in order to reduce outages in the country.

A 126km, 220-kilovolt Chashma-Bannu link has been planned to transmit the additional electricity produced by the Chashma Nuclear Power Plant after completion of under-construction generation plants.

The project had been funded through domestic financial arrangements, said a NTDC spokesman.

“It will help transmit power to load centres in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and enhance economic activity in areas covered by Pesco (Peshawar Electric Supply Company) and Tesco (Tribal Areas Electric Supply Company),” he said.

“Following the signing of an agreement on May 13, 2014, the high-voltage transmission project has been pursued with an ambitious execution plan to complete in 450 days, despite security issues and the crossing over Indus River.”

NTDC started the project on a fast track and in 224 days, 360 tower foundations out of a total of 383 were strengthened. Apart from this, 253 towers were erected on site.

“Currently, work on the most difficult part pertaining to the construction of a tower foundation in the Indus River is in full swing,” he added.

Commenting on the commitment and efforts for the completion of the project, he said NTDC had already enhanced its transformation capabilities for 5,400 MVA by completing new grid stations at existing stations in the last two years.
