Item numbers in Pakistani films

Letter April 07, 2015
Item songs are not part of our culture. These songs have too much vulgarity

KARACHI: In Pakistan, where the local film industry is heading towards success, a new trend seems to be picking up. It has now become necessary to put at least one item song in every movie. Item songs are not part of our culture. These songs have too much vulgarity. Just because of these obscene songs, families cannot watch these movies.

Film producers and directors should bear in mind that under-age people are also affected by these songs. The Indian film industry is not something our industry should aspire to. There is no need to emulate the trends of vulgarity and thoughtless obscenity. Pakistan’s own culture should be kept in mind before making such decisions.

Also, one can notice that people watch vulgar Indian songs without any qualms or complaints. But they are quick to raise their voices if Pakistan follows suit. Why is that? Why is this country full of such hypocritical people? The censor board should take decisions about this and regarding which types of songs should not be promoted in Pakistan. Also, Pakistani films which contain such songs should not be released. The local film censor board needs to take serious steps to overcome this negativity which is spreading very quickly and has a acute and adverse impact on the people of Pakistan, not to mention that this is akin to launching an assault on Pakistani culture.
