KARACHI: The Pink Tree Company-a designer label lunched its debut collection at The East End restaurant last week. The range consisted of stitched outfits in pure cotton and organza and ranged from casual day wear to formal evening wear.

According to Mohsin Sayeed, the man behind the collection, Pink Tree Company showcased Spring/Summer wear in pastels, beachwear in black and gold and even formal wear in Swarovski crystals. “Cotton had to be here for the summers,” said Sayeed, whereas organza according to him shows off “grace, old world romantic touch and is very feminine.”

Describing the Beachwear line, with sparkling motifs, such as butterflies, scorpions, dragonflies and ants, he said, “I enjoy putting and placing these on an outfit. I love them!”

Revealing whether or not the source of his aesthetic sense of fashion is his brother, designer Umar Sayeed, he said, “It’s all about shared genes and shared dreams. But in all honesty it rubbed on us and we got the sensibility from our mother Samia Sayeed. She loved making our clothes. From making a ‘shaadi ka jora’, be it farshi gharara or angharkha — crochet to tie and dye, she knew everything.”

“You know we were the best dressed children in the family, because Amma knew how to dress us up well,” he added.

Sayeed credits the traditional Pakistani designers Bunto Kazmi and Faiza Samee for capturing the elegance.  However it is too early to call him a designer. “Probably ten years down the road, yes, but not for now. For now I need to equip myself better,” he said.

On selecting The East End restaurant to showcase his collection, he said, “It has a character of its own and this place certainly transports one to another era while keeping the contemporary touch alive. So do my clothes. Hence, finding a balance between my clothing line and this place — it serves the best purpose in town.”

For a fashion writer, entering the realm of designing was no mean feat. When questioned, why he opted to shift his interest, he told, “To me frankly I stopped getting media-related work because of having a big mouth. I knew what fashion was all about as I was writing about it, so I got together with my friends Hadia Khan and Sheena Rizvi and decided to do something; for this was the second best thing I knew after writing.”
