Dera Ghazi Khan DPO Ghulam Mubashir Maikan said on Thursday that a man held for killing scores of children had been killed in a police encounter.
He was speaking to journalists. Maikan said Tariq alias Kallu was arrested after he had killed nine-year-old Muhammad Ramazan, a student from a religious seminary. He said a team had taken the suspect to Kot Haibat to recover a weapon used by him to kill children.
Maikan said unidentified assailants had attacked the party after it reached the spot to help Tariq escape. He said the suspect had been injured in an exchange of fire that followed. Maikan said he had succumbed to his injuries on the way to Dera Ghazi Khan District Headquarters Hospital. He said the body of the deceased had been sent to a mortuary for autopsy.

Maikan said police had recovered the body of Ramazan from a drain. He also announced cash prizes and letters of appreciation for the team that had nabbed the suspect. Tariq said he had evaded a social backlash as a punchayat had ruled in his favour.
