GILGIT: At least 16 unregistered Afghan nationals residing illegally in Chilas town of Gilgit-Baltistan were extradited to Peshawar on Monday.

The measure is part of the implementation of the National Action Plan formulated in the wake of the Army Public School attack in Peshawar on December 16, 2014. Chilas is a major town of Diamer district which borders Kohistan district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

Law enforcement agencies are cracking down against all unregistered foreigners residing in different areas of the region. “The action is being taken to ensure peace in the region,” a police official told The Express Tribune.

The official said the detainees did not possess sufficient documents and were shifted to refugee camps in Peshawar, from where they will be repatriated to their homeland. “The detainees also included women and children who have been living in the area for a while,” he said.

Chilas SP Rauf Qaisarani said security has been tightened following the Gilgit jailbreak last month and that crackdowns against unregistered Afghan nationals are still under way.

Keeping tabs

Diamer police launched a search operation in Chilas District Jail and recovered several mobile phones and knives from the possession of inmates. Action was taken on the directives of DC Usman Ahmad. “The operation was supervised by the DC and SP,” a police official said.

Meanwhile, the G-B government has tasked the IGP to identify ‘dangerous militants’ present in prisons of G-B, so that they can be shifted to other facilities of the country.

“The decision was taken during a high-level meeting attended by the chief minister and chief secretary recently,” said a government official.

Various security measures are being taken following the jailbreak on February 28 in which two inmates accused of killing foreign tourists at Nanga Parbat base camp managed to escape.
