PESHAWAR: University of Peshawar (UoP) Vice Chancellor (VC) Professor Dr Muhammad Rasul Jan on Tuesday said research is crucial to evolving into a knowledge-based economy.

Addressing the first meeting of the recently-established research forum at UoP, the VC said the modern role of universities is to ensure accessibility and relevance of quality higher education that benefits the market and the society on the whole. He said UoP will take every step to foster research that benefits the general public.

The participants decided to organise a competition among the faculty and students to promote the culture of research in the varsity.

It was also decided to extend the scope of the forum to all departments.

The forum will work on the development of patents and community-based projects. Dr Jan said steps are being taken to bridge the gap between the academia and industry.

The meeting was organised under the auspices of the Office of Research Innovation and Commercialisation (ORIC) and attended by over 50 scientists and faculty members. Earlier, ORIC Director Prof Dr Nisar briefed the attendees about the objectives of the office.

HEC should devise a policy to give grants based on patents and high impact journals publications. Prime weightage should be given to transfer of technology (for technical universities) and patents. Around the world, good universities generate some funds on their own too. They don't rely totally on state money.
