MULTAN: National Assembly Member Jamshaid Dasti on Sunday said he had enrolled in a law programme at Bahauddin Zakariya University, saying he wanted to become a pro bono lawyer. Talking to The Express Tribune, Dasti said he had been disqualified from contesting elections in NA-178 for having a fake degree. He said the allegation was part of a campaign by a religious organisation in Muzaffargarh. He said Rashid Rehman, the human rights lawyer gunned down in Multan last year, had inspired him. “I want to volunteer my services for the poor and oppressed citizens of south Punjab,” he said. “It (the law degree) will also save me lawyers’ fee if I am ever in trouble with the law,” he joked. He said due to his busy schedule, he had enrolled in a distance-learning programme offered by the BZU. Dasti said law courses should be mandatory for undergraduate studies. “Students should be told what their legal rights and responsibilities are so that they are not exploited when they join the workforce,” he said. “More people need to be taught what their rules do to them under the garb of democracy.”
