HYDERABAD: Nine more deaths were reported in Tharparkar on Wednesday, taking the unofficial death toll of children in the district to 544 for the year. Meanwhile, a team of medical experts reached the drought-affected desert district to uncover the cause of this incessant mortality.

Three of the day's deaths occurred at Civil Hospital, Mithi, according to civil surgeon Dr Shafqat Ali Dahri. The deceased were all newborn boys, the sons of Wahid Fakir, Bheemru and Pandi respectively. In Kaloi town, four-month-old Asma, daughter of Khuda Bux Umrani died in a local hospital, while the newborn son of Ramzan Nohrio died in Allah Rakhio Nohrio village. Ten-day-old Jamal, son of Qadir Bux Rind, 18-month-old Ashfaq, son of Sachal Rahimon, and eight-year-old Raksha, daughter of Saadu Meghwadh, reportedly died in Chachro tehsil. Another death was reported from Diplo tehsil's Kamal Halo village, where the newborn son of Qaim Ali passed away.

Medical students step up

A team of 70 doctors and 130 postgraduate and undergraduate students from the Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences arrived in Tharparkar to carry out fieldwork for four days. Vice-chancellor Dr Noshad Shaikh said they will provide health services and conduct research surveys in all the six tehsils.

Dr Shaikh announced that all varsity students who gain admission from the domicile of Tharparkar and Umerkot districts will be sent for six-month house jobs in their native districts. This, he hoped, will address the shortage of doctors.

Meanwhile, Dr Anila Attaur Rehman, the dean of community medicine, said the survey questionnaire consisted of four parts, covering the general needs of the people such as education, livestock, water and food; maternal health; preventive vaccination; and health indicators. She added that the female doctors in the team will visit villages to collect data from the residents.
