Inking agreements: Five MoUs signed at Khyber University

Aim to help institutes enhance research in energy and health sectors

PESHAWAR: Five Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) were signed at the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences, Hayatabad on Monday to help institutions carry out product-oriented research.

The documents were signed between Directorate of Science and Technology (DoST), Khyber Medical University (KMU), University of Peshawar (UoP) and University of Engineering & Technology (UET). The MoUs intend to help these institutions carry out product-oriented research for alternative energy resources, health, pharmacy and chemical and material sciences. Out of the five MoUs, one each has been signed with KMU and UET, while the other three have been signed with various departments of UoP.

The first memorandum talks about setting up a molecular laboratory at KMU’s Institute of Basic Medical Sciences to help MPhil and PhD students study the diagnosis of hepatitis, dengue fever and genetic disorders so that proper medication can be found for these ailments. The cost of the laboratory has been ascertained to be Rs17.4 million.

Under the second MoU, a prototype of third generation solar cells will be implemented by UET. The project is aimed at using innovative ways and materials to make efficient and low-cost solar cells which will benefit small and medium businesses by providing them energy. The cost of the project is estimated to be Rs13.6 million.

The third MoU aims at helping the pharmacy department of UoP make drugs to treat cancer. The project will provide a window to the national and local industry to have innovative technology for safe delivery of cheap anti-cancer drugs. The cost of the project has been ascertained to be Rs13.4 million.

The fourth and fifth MoU deliberate over preparing chemicals and machines for telecommunication and laser treatments.
