KARACHI: Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Association (PBSA) President Alamgir Sheikh declared his intention to hold one last meeting with the Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) officials for the release of the national cueists’ cash awards as per the National Sports Policy.

Muhammad Asif and Muhammad Sajjad are still awaiting their prize money, which now collectively exceeds Rs40 million, from the IPC and the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB).

Asif won the 2012 IBSF World Championship followed by the 2013 Asian 6-Red Championship, while the duo won the IBSF World Team Championship the same year.

Similarly, Sajjad has done well in global events by grabbing bronze and silver medals at the IBSF World Championships in 2013 and 2014 respectively.

“In a few days, I’ll be meeting the IPC and PSB officials along with Asif and Sajjad,” Sheikh told The Express Tribune.

“If the cueists don’t receive their deserving rewards, we’ll stage a sit-in protest in Islamabad. All cueists will join hands with the PBSA officials to fight for what’s right.”

PBSA hosting World Championship next year

According to Sheikh, the PBSA will be hosting the World Championship events in August next year and
expects at least 30 countries to participate.

“We hope we can host five world championship events in the first week of August, which include 6-Red, Masters and ladies event. We are expecting a minimum of 30-35 countries of the world to come here,” he added.

Meanwhile, the National Snooker Ranking Championship is beginning from tomorrow in Karachi, with as many as 27 players participating in the event.

The cueists have been divided into four groups with one comprising six players and three consisting of seven. Two players from each group will qualify for the quarter-finals.
