PESHAWAR: An influential tribal leader and chief of a peace committee in Waziristan survived a bomb attack near the Tank district on Friday morning.

Police officials said that Islam Gul’s vehicle was targeted by unidentified militants with an improvise explosive device (IED) on Tank Jandola Road, however, the device went off at a distance from the vehicle.

No loss of life or damage to property was reported.

Gul's personal security guards opened fire soon after the explosion while security forces cordoned off the area.

No arrests were made in the area – which connects Tank of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with South Waziristan.

Threats to the life of Gul were confirmed by police officials prior to this incident.

A large number of tribesmen belonging to South Waziristan are sheltering in Tank and Dera Ismael Khan since 2009.
