GILGIT: UNESCO has called for entries for its Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation.

“Submissions are now being accepted for the 2015 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation,” stated a press release issued from UNESCO Bangkok’s Culture Unit on Wednesday. The deadline for receipt of submission is March 31, 2015, it added.

According to the press release, the award recognises the efforts of private individuals and organisations that have successfully restored or conserved heritage sites. “It highlights the importance of the conservation process and recognises social impact and community in restoration projects,” the press release reads.

This year, heritage sites which are over 50 years old and have been completed within the last 10 years will be eligible for consideration in the conservation category. The press release stated conservation works on houses, commercial and institutional buildings, historic towns and villages, archaeological heritage sites and cultural landscapes are eligible for entry.

Since the award was established in 2000, UNESCO has received 562 entries from 24 countries. According to the press release, efforts to conserve and restore 174 projects in the region have won accolades since 2000.

Moreover, efforts made to restore heritage sites in Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) have also been recognised by UNESCO. In 2013, Khaplu Palace in Baltistan won the Award of Distinction in UNESCO’s Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards.
