Celebration: Lawyers welcome new PbBC members

The Aiwan-i-Adl rang with shouts of celebration on Tuesday as newly-elected members of the Punjab Bar Council thanked the lawyers for voting for them.


Wearing fragrant garlands around their necks, the members shook hands with their supporters. A group did a bhangra around them. Sweets were also distributed among lawyers. More than 19,500 lawyers voted for 16 members of the Punjab Bar Council on on November 22.

There were 69 contenders for the 16 positions. According to the unofficial results, Tahir Nasrullah, Babar Waheed, Agha Faisal, Bushra Qamar, Syed Farhad Ali Shah, Rana Intizar, Munir Hussain Bhatti, Jamil Asghar Bhatti, Mian Faiz Ali, Abdul Samad Bisriay, Malik Sarood, Khawar Bashir, Khalida Parveen, Abdul Latif Hanjra and Mushtaq Mohal have been elected.

Request to withhold results

Justice Shams Mehmood Mirza of LHC on Tuesday summoned PbBC Chief Election Commissioner Hanif Khatana on Wednesday on a petition requesting the court to restrain him from announcing bar election results until 35 polling agents cast their votes.

Petitioner Asif Sattar said the returning officer should be stopped from announcing results. He said 35 polling agents had not been allowed to cast their votes. He said an application was sent to Khatana who had then declared them genuine voters.
