KARACHI: Pakistan’s Nasir Iqbal and Aamir Atlas Khan reached the semi-finals of the PSA $25,000 2014 Dubai Cup yesterday at the Nad Al Sheba Club in Dubai.

Nasir upset third seed Mohamed Abouelghar of Egypt 3-1 in the quarter-final as he took the first two games 11-5, 11-4, but Abouelghar hit back in the third 11-9. However, Nasir sealed the win in the deciding game 11-8 to cruise into the last four.

“Both Abouelghar and I played well,” said Nasir after the match. “We last played against each other in the British Juniors back in 2006 and faced each other eight years later today [Tuesday].”

Unseeded Aamir also followed Nasir as he outplayed eighth seed Asyraf Azan 3-0 in their quarter-final, winning with scores of 11-8, 11-9, 11-8.

Nasir will play top seed Karim Abdel Gawad and Aamir will face second seed Chris Simpson, who won their last-eight matches against Zahed Mohamed and Paul Coll respectively.

Pakistan Squash Federation secretary Aamir Nawaz praised Nasir for taking down higher-ranked players in his current campaign. “If the players continued to perform like this, they might play in the PSA US$50,000 events next year,” he said.
