KARACHI: District East police claimed to have arrested 10 suspects, including a Lyari gang member and a policeman in raids while a suspected gang member allegedly involved in over 20 cases of murder was killed in an encounter with law enforcers in Lyari.

In a press conference at his office on Monday, District East SSP Pir Muhammad Shah told the media that a member of Lyari's Ghaffar Zikri group had been arrested in Gulshan-e-Iqbal. The suspect, identified as Wali Muhammad alias Wallu, was a close aide of notorious Lyari gangster Razzak Commando. SSP Shah said that Wallu revealed during interrogation that he had killed at least four people.

Meanwhile, Abdul Rehman alias Babu, a suspected member of banned organisation Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan, was arrested by Aziz Bhatti police. According to SSP Shah, he was wanted in cases of extortion and other crimes.

SSP Shah added that eight more suspects had been arrested in various incidents. Those held were identified as Syed Ataullah Shah alias Shah Jee, Abid Ali, Ilyas alias Kala, Raees Sarwar, Wasif Shabbir, Israr Zaman, Mutahir and Atif Sultan. According to SSP Shah, they were involved in a number of cases of crime, including phone and vehicle snatching and house robberies. He claimed that two of the suspects, Sarwar and Shabbir, had joined the police force in 2002 and were posted to the Saeedabad police station, but Shabbir was dismissed in 2004 for involvement in crime. He added that both of them had been involved in criminal activities, including street crime, across the city since 2006.

Meanwhile, in Lyari, a suspected gang member was killed during an alleged encounter with the police in Kalakot. He was later identified as Daud Pathan alias Chota Chawwanni and was associated with the Uzair Jan Baloch group. SSP Sheeraz Nazeer said that the encounter took place near the ice factory in Old Haji Camp area when the police conducted a raid at a gang hideout.
