HYDERABAD:

A kidnapped National Highway Authority (NHA) official and his driver were rescued in a police raid in Naushero Feroze district on Wednesday, while two suspected kidnappers were killed and five were arrested.

NHA project director Ghulam Shabbir Shaikh was kidnapped along with his driver, Abdul Hakeem, from National Highway in Daulatpur town on November 7. He was en route to Sukkur from Hyderabad.

The kidnapping stirred a police manhunt in several districts, with Nawabshah, Hyderabad and Naushero Feroze police taking part in the raid in Khadim Zardari village in Moro tehsil. Nawabshah SSP Abdul Salam Shaikh claimed that there was an exchange of fire in which the kidnappers, Pyaro Machi and Irfan Jatoi, were killed.

The police registered an FIR at Qamarabad police station against the slain suspects, the five who were arrested and two others who escaped.

Meanwhile, some police sources claimed that the police staged a fake encounter, claiming that the slain suspects were shot dead after being arrested.
