FAISALABAD: Faisalabad District and Sessions Judge Safdar Saleem Shahid directed the city police officer (CPO) on Tuesday to take steps to check the increasing cases of illegal detention at police stations.

In a directive issued to the CPO, the judge expressed concern over the illegal detention of the citizens.

“Incidence of illegal detention in the district has reached an alarming level. The practice is a violation of the law,” the judge stated.

He observed that suspects were often kept at police stations without formal registration of cases against them and tortured.

The judge referred to a case in which a man was tortured by police. A medical board later confirmed the allegations. “Such practices should be checked and those involved in such illegal acts should be brought to justice,” the judge stated. He observed that police were illegally detaining people without entering their detention in the daily diary (roznamcha) or anywhere on paper. “The registration of a case itself is a very sensitive part of the proceedings. However, it has been noted that some police officers, especially SHOs, and investigation officers do not care for the rules regarding the registration of cases and the due process of investigation that follows,” he stated.

He asked the Faisalabad city police officer to ensure that the due process of law was followed in the registration and investigation of criminal cases.
