Police said four Afghan nationals were practicing judo at a park in Gor Gathri tehsil when they were approached by policemen who asked for their refugee cards.
After the Afghans failed to produce any documents, they were taken to Kotwali police station. There, they told the police they were all members of the Afghan team visiting Peshawar for a few days. They were released after their claims were verified.
“They (Afghan nationals) told the police they were members of the Afghan Karate team and came to Peshawar for a visit. We verified their claim and then released them,” Kotwali DSP Sahibzada Sajjad told The Express Tribune. “It is just a routine [matter] as we arrest all Afghan nationals residing in the country illegally.”
Two people kidnapped
Two cousins were kidnapped from Juma Khan village in the jurisdiction of Nasir Bagh police on Sunday night.
Police said Owais and Ahmad Zahir were whisked away at gunpoint from their village by unidentified armed men in the evening. They were later shifted to adjacent Khyber Agency.
“They (the kidnapped men) are cousins and one of them, Owais, has been an employee of an Islamic bank,” said a police official.
In the past 15 days, five people have been kidnapped from the same village. Earlier, three people were whisked away in their own vehicle by armed men.
