PESHAWAR: Keeping in view the possibility of terror attacks during Muharram, Lady Reading Hospital’s (LRH) administration has declared an emergency and cancelled leaves of doctors, paramedics and other staff members.

It has also asked administrations of hospitals in safer areas, including Hayatabad Medical Complex and Khyber Teaching Hospital, to provide LRH ambulances, said LRH Deputy Medical Superintendent (administration) Dr Ghulam Subhani.

He said a circular had been issued on the 1st of Muharram stating an emergency has been declared in all wards. He added special arrangements have been made for 9th and 10th Muharram.

“LRH is always in an emergency like situation, but we have adopted special measures for Muharram, specifically for the 9th and 10th of the month.

Eleven ambulances, 19 doctors, 80 paramedics, 22 drivers and 56 class IV employees will be providing services at the accident and emergency centre,” Subhani told The Express Tribune.

He said the staff has been divided into two shifts for both the 9th and 10th of Muharram.

He also said the health department at the FATA Secretariat has been requested to provide LRH with some ambulances from hospitals in areas where the situation during Muharram remains calm.

Subhani said special passes will be issued to all those performing duties on the 9th and 10th of Muharram, adding two police personnel along with medical staff (with passes) will be deputed with the ambulances moving along Muharram processions.

He  said private vehicles will not be allowed to enter  the LRH premises on the two days whereas police authorities will be responsible to make sure roads leading towards the emergency gate are clear as other gates will be closed.

Subhani said the LRH administration was in close contact with Rescue 1122. When asked, he added the hospital was fully-equipped with all facilities including medicines to overcome an emergency.
