2nd ODI: Pakistan rebound with seven-wicket win

U19 outfit flattens Afghanistan in second one-day match

KARACHI: A steady 84 by Sajawal Riaz guided Pakistan U19 to a seven-wicket win over Afghanistan in the second encounter of their three-match one-day series at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on .

Chasing 199, Pakistan reached the target with six overs to spare as Riaz and Zeeshan Malik (50) recorded an opening stand of 78 runs.

“We were determined to make up for our poor show in the first match [that resulted in a 10-wicket defeat],” head coach Tahir Mehmood told The Express Tribune. “The boys proved themselves capable of living up to the expectations for which they were selected.”

Man-of-the-match Riaz achieved the highest score of the match off 119 deliveries, hitting seven boundaries and one six, while Malik struck seven fours in his half century.

Naveenul Haq Murid and Javed took one wicket each, giving away 48 and 36 runs respectively.

“The players are now in a shape to take the third match from Afghanistan,” added Mehmood.

Earlier, Afghanistan were restricted to 198 runs in 45 overs as Aamer Jamal took three wickets, while Noor Ali bagged the prized scalp of Hazaratullah Zazai, the first ODI’s man of the match. Awais Iqbal and Muhammad Shahabul Khan claimed two wickets.

Rashid Khan was the best performer for the Afghan side, scoring an unbeaten 67 off 62 balls, while Juma Gul contributed 33.

“We played as a team,” said Pakistan U19 captain Saud Shakeel. “The coordination missing in the opening match made a strong appearance today [Wednesday].”

The last match will be played October 31.
