KARACHI: The main accused in the Edhi Centre robbery has been arrested in Korangi, Express News reported on Saturday.

The search for the suspects has been ongoing throughout the city since October 19 -- the day the robbery took place -- in which five kilos of gold and foreign currency worth Rs20 million were reportedly stolen from the Edhi centre located in the Mithadar area.

Police arrested a man named Rashid Mazhar who allegedly planned the robbery in its entirety. He was arrested in the Zaman Town area of Korangi.

Mazhar was previously a driver for the Edhi Centre having resigned from his position just nine months ago. Originally from Sahiwal, Mazhar came to Karachi in 2005 and started working for the Edhi centre in 2006.

Earlier this week, police had identified a man after they collected statements and cellphone details of around two dozen men and women serving and former staff members of the foundation.

Police will carry out questioning to determine the location of the further five suspects for whom the search is still ongoing.

Everybody knows who is responsible for most big crimes in Pakistan. It is an open secret that local parties have militant gangs and extract bhatta. In case bhatta is not given they would take it by force. Who is jealous of Edhi Sahib and does not want him to get the charity? After Hakeen Saeed God forbid it could be Edhi Sahib or his organization. Police should be handsomely rewarded for their achievement.
