DI KHAN: Seven Ashraf Khel tribesmen have been arrested by the political administration of South Waziristan following an attack on the Frontier Corps (FC) in Birmal tehsil, Wana last week.

An official of the administration told The Express Tribune on Friday that the administration launched a crackdown against the Ashraf Khel tribe after two improvised explosive devices (IED) targeted FC officials in Tora Gollain area of Wana on October 14.

As many as 10 FC personnel were injured in the attack which took place in an area inhabited by the Ashraf Khel tribe.

“Thus far, the political administration has arrested seven people under the collective responsibility clause of the Frontier Crimes Regulations (FCR) and impounded two vehicles,” the official said.

Three people were arrested from Wana while four were arrested from Tank district; all of them belong to the Ashraf Khel tribe, he added.

Domiciles and identity cards are also not being issued to the tribe’s members. Moreover, the political administration has instructed the khasadar force to keep a vigilant eye on the tribe and arrest anyone acting suspiciously.

The tribesmen, however, are not happy about the situation. Ali Muhammad, an elder of the Ashraf Khel tribe told The Express Tribune that people who have nothing to do with the incident are suffering due to the political administration’s decision.

“Our businesses and routine activities are being affected because we cannot move around freely due to the fear of arrest,” he said. The elder demanded the government take notice of the problems the tribe was facing.
