A two-day seminar titled “Women Police: The Silver Lining” was held at a private hotel on Wednesday by Individualland, an NGO. Speakers highlight important issues of the police force, such as the need of increasing the number of women police, having separate facilities for them and changing the society’s mindset towards women police officers.

Participating in the seminar, former interior secretary Kamal Shah said “There is a dire need to increase the number of women police officials.”

Niaz Ahmed Siddiqui, former IG Sindh, who chaired the panel, said “There is a need to end the culture of carrying weapons as it promotes the trend of tribalisation. We need to move towards civilisation.” He suggested that there should be at least 20 per cent representation of women in police departments.

Individualland Director Gulmina Bilal said “Our team has been working for the past seven years on police reforms with an emphasis on the role of women.”

Sharing her response with the panel, Hyderabad Sub-Inspector Najma Khuro said “There is lack of awareness regarding the need of women in police. We live in a society where parents prefer their sons to become policemen but does not encourage their daughters to adopt the same field.”
